Cookies and EU law

The law applying to cookies and similar technologies for storing information on websites changed on 26 May 2012. The Office of Rail and Road (formerly the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR)) therefore had a new cookies policy and improved the way of letting site user know when we used cookies during your visit to our site.

A cookie is stored on a users' computer or device (such as a mobile phone), when you visit a website. It is used to recognise any repeat visits you make and to provide a better user experience. The cookie cannot be used to identify you personally.

The new law (e-Privacy Directive) required all websites operating in the European Union (EU) to obtain consent from users before implementing cookies to capture online visitor information. Essentially, this means cookies can only be placed on machines if the user or subscriber has opted-in.

The ORR complied with this law and now asks users permission to place cookies on their device.
