Our roads work is entirely funded by the Department for Transport (DfT). Our rail safety and economic regulation activities are funded by levying charges on the rail industry. These separate funding streams show a clear distinction between our road and rail functions, and provide assurance to those funding the roles.
We have agreed a three year funding settlement with DfT for our highways monitoring role which is set out in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DfT and ORR. We have set up internal processes to ensure that there is clear delineation between resources (including time) spent on rail and highways.
