Biodiversity is defined as the variety of all animal and plant life on earth. It has a vital role in sustaining our natural environment – from providing the air we breathe, to absorbing carbon and underpinning the food chain.

ORR has today written to Network Rail over concerns about a backlog in examining the condition of its railway structures such as bridges, tunnels and culverts.

As the title suggests, our holding to account policy sets out the tools we’re proposing to use to monitor performance, escalate and investigate issues and if necessary, take enforcement action to ensure that Network Rail delivers its business plans for 2024-2029 (control period (CP7)) in the best way for passengers, freight users and taxpayers.

Statistics published today by the Office of Rail and Road show that for the four weeks between 5 February and 4 March, TransPennine Express’ cancellation score worsened from 7.2% to 23.8% when adjusted to include pre-cancellations due to a shortage of available train crew.

The rail regulator’s latest official statistics show that for the quarter October to December 2022, Britain’s railways saw 4.5% of all planned trains cancelled, the highest since the record began in 2014*.

The Office of Rail and Road has today written to the rail industry outlining the need to change how they record ‘pre-cancellations’ and to introduce a more passenger-friendly and transparent way of working when making late changes to services.
