This content and related publications refer to our annual assessment of safety on the strategic road network.

National Highways is the government-owned company responsible for the strategic road network (SRN) – the motorways and major A-roads in England. We hold National Highways to account for delivering improvements to road users, including improving safety.

This year we have prepared the second annual assessment of safety performance on the strategic road network (SRN). Due to the timing of the release of the official STATS19 casualty data, we publish these reports in December in order to report on safety performance across the SRN.

As well as our assessment of safety performance in 2022 on the SRN, this also includes an update on our findings in relation to recommendations from the Transport Select Committee’s inquiry into the rollout and safety of smart motorways.
