This content and related publications refer to our annual assessment of safety on the strategic road network.
National Highways is the government-owned company responsible for the strategic road network – the motorways and major A-roads in England. The Office of Rail and Road holds National Highways to account for delivering improvements to road users, including improving safety.
In previous years, because of the timing of the release of the official STATS19 casualty data, we have published our assessment of safety performance as a standalone update to our annual assessment of National Highways’ performance, published each July.
We are now taking the opportunity to draw together and report on our road safety activity in our first annual assessment of safety on the strategic road network (SRN), published on 15 December 2022.
As well as our assessment of safety performance in 2021 on the SRN as a whole, this also includes our early findings in relation to recommendations from the Transport Select Committee’s inquiry into the rollout and safety of smart motorways.
