When assessing first aid requirements at railway stations it is good practice to consider passengers' needs as well as those of employees.
A coroner's report into the death of a passenger at St Albans station in 2013 highlighted the need for appropriate first aid equipment and suitably trained station staff.
Advice and guidance for employers on how to comply with Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, and an assessment of first aid requirements, are available. As a minimum, a workplace should have a first aid box and a person appointed to manage first aid arrangements, such as calling emergency services.
The regulations do not require the assessment to include the public, but good employers would take account of passengers' needs, and we strongly recommend that they are included in any first aid assessment.
